Clare Bird Sightings

Monday 30th April 2012

We are delighted to announce today that a pair of WHITE-TAILED EAGLES have nested on Bushy Island Lough Derg. These birds and another pair have been on Lough Derg for well over a year now. The birds have been monitored for the past month where both the female and male bird have been incubating eggs. It has been over 110 years since this species last nested in Ireland and these two birds from the re-introduced population in Kerry are the first to successfully nest in Ireland. We do ask that people going to view the birds do not go near the island in boats or pleasure craft as the birds might abandon the eggs at this early stage. Best viewing is from Mount Shannon Pier where wardens will be on hand to show you the birds through a telescope.
One Long-eared Owl was at Darragh.
