One immature Blue-winged Teal was at the Shannon Airport Lagoon this evening (John N Murphy)(17.30). Also at the Lagoon were three Little Egrets, three Water Rails, six Gadwall, 14 Wigeon, 15 Shoveler and 36 Teal.  Six Green Sandpipers were at Lough Gash, Newmarket-on-Fergus this morning.

Red-eyed Vireo at Loop Head John N Murphy More images at www.murfswildlife.blogspot.com

A Red-eyed Vireo was found at Loop Head this morning in a field  along the road to the Lighthouse. (John N. Murphy & Finbarr MacGabhann)(9.50). The bird remained in the same area up to 15.30 but was not seen after this time.  This is a fifth county record of this rare North American vagrant.  Also at Loop Head were one Turtle Dove, one Yellow Wagtail, one Chiffchaff, 80 Skylark, 50 Golden Plover and two Whimbrel.  One Bonxie and one Arctic Skua were off the tip of Loop Head this morning.

There were five Green Sandpipers at Lough Gash, Newmarket-on-Fergus this morning.  One male Chiffchaff was singing at Applewood, Ballycar.

Monday 22nd September 2014

A Nightingale landed on board at 17:50 approx. 40 nautical miles West of Loop Head. Present for c.10 minutes before flying off. R.V. Celtic Explorer. (Niall T Keogh). This is a second county record, the first was on 10th October 2010 at Loop Head. There was also one Blackcap, one Swallow and a Merlin off the boat.

The Garganey was still at the Shannon Airport Lagoon this evening (John N Murphy), along with 44 Wigeon, 38 Teal, six Gadwall, ten Shoveler,  four Little Egrets, one Water Rail, 500 Black-tailed Godwits were on the mudflats with 80 plus Knot mixed in with the flock, 22 Curlew and 16 Oystercatchers.  There were 40 Migrant Hawker Dragonflies along the track to the south of the lagoon.

Eight Gadwall and 11 Wigeon were at the Coonagh Nature Reserve.

Spotted Flycatcher at Kilbaha John N Murphy

At Loop Head today there was one Spotted Flycatcher, one Chiffchaff, two Redpolls, 26 Skylarks, 43 Wheatears, 44 Golden Plover, six Snipe, 200 Meadow Pipit, three Sparrowhawks, one Tree Sparrow, ten Chaffinches, 16 Chough and two Whimbrel.  At Cloghaun Lough there was one Ruff, one Water Rail, one Bar-tailed Godwit, two Greenshank, 25 Curlew and ten Teal.  There were two Green Sandpipers at Lough Gash, Newmarket-on-Fergus.  Five Little Egrets were at Querrin.  At the Shannon Airport Lagoon outing this morning there were 700 Black-tailed Godwits, 20 Lapwing, 15 Curlew 12 Shoveler, eight Wigeon, one Little Egret, two Wheatears and two Clouded Yellow Butterflies.  There were 46 Snipe and two Wheatear at Kilcredaun Marsh.One Chiffchaff was at Spanish Point.
