Clare Bird Sightings

Wednesday 13th March 2024

The first Wheatear recorded in the county this year was at Goleen.(John N Murphy)
One Whimbrel was at Kilbaha and 300 Golden Plover were at Ross, Loop Head. (JNM)
A Chiffchaff was at Tullagher Bog.(JNM)

A Great White Egret was at Bunlicky (John N Murphy). This is the 3rd County record.
Eight Sand Martins were at King’s Island Marsh (TT).

Two Buzzard were north of the Limerick University on the Clare side of the River Shannon.(James Organ)
Twenty six Long-tailed Duck were off Aughinish Martello Tower.(Paul Troake)
Two Black-throated Diver and 138 Great Northern Diver were in the same area.(PT)

Norwegian Black-headed Gull White J2111 ©Tom Tarpey

The adult Iceland Gull was on the Shannon between Harvey’s Quay and Steamboat Quay (TT).
A Norwegian colour ringed Black-headed Gull, White J2111, was at O’Callaghan’s Strand (TT). The bird was ringed as chick in June 2022 on an island near Oslo.

Two Buzzards were at Applewood, Ballycar.(John N Murphy)

A Whimbrel was at Gleninagh Pier and another at Gleninagh Castle.(VC et al)
A Common Sandpiper was at Inismurray Quay.(Chris Cullen)
Twenty four Purple Sandpiper were at Clahane.(Geoff Pearson)

An immature White-tailed Eagle with a dark orange tag on right wing was hunting over limestone pavement west of Mullaghmore. Mobbed by a Peregrine at one stage. Possibly the same bird seen at Islandavanna on the 23rd of February.(James Organ)
Another White-tailed Eagle was at Ballynacally.(John Hehir)
Two Goldeneye were at Lough Cullaun.(JO)
There were 152 Golden Plover and two Purple Sandpiper at Clahane.(Jeff Copner)
