Thursday 7th August 2025

A seawatch at the Bridges of Ross between 07.00-12.00 produced one Arctic Skua, one Great Skua, around 850 Manx Shearwater per hour, one Great Shearwater, 32 Sooty Shearwater, 52 Whimbrel, 18 Storm Petrel and one Arctic Tern.(per Irish Birding)

A seawatch this afternoon between 13.00-17.30 at the Bridges of Ross observed eight Wilson’s Petrel, 10 Storm Petrel, 36 Sooty Shearwater, two Arctic Skua,(dark phase adult birds), 11 Arctic Tern and 24 Whimbrel.(John N Murphy, Geoff Pearson and Tony Culley)

Later this evening one Balearic Shearwater, one Pomarine Skua, one Cory’s Shearwater and one Sabine’s Gull were recorded. (Tony Cully)

A juvenile White-tailed Eagle was at Lough Muckanagh. An adult bird present there since August 1st flew north yesterday.(Maura Crowe)

A male Goshawk was recorded feeding on a fresh kill near a farmyard at Kilcolman, Shanagolden yesterday evening (ES). The provenance of the bird remains uncertain and an escaped bird cannot be ruled out at this stage.

A 2cy male White-tailed Eagle, six Pochard, 12 Tufted Duck, a Wigeon and 21 Mallard were at Coonagh (TT).

The WTE (tag 43) was released at Tarbert Bay last year and has been moving around the inner estuary in the past few months.

A seawatch at the Bridges of Ross between 06.30-16.00 observed one Fea’s Petrel(12.00), four Wilson’s Petrel, 25 Storm Petrel, one Balearic Shearwater, ten Cory’s Shearwater, six Great Shearwater, 54 Sooty Shearwater, over 5000 Manx Shearwater, one sub adult Long-tailed Skua, one Pomarine Skua, five Arctic Skua, four Great Skua, four Sabine’s Gull, four Arctic Tern, one Grey Phalarope and around 200 Whimbrel.(Niall Keogh plus nine other observers)

Off Ross Ringing Station between 10.00-11.30 a seawatch produced one Wilson’s Petrel(10.58), three Cory’s Shearwater, six Great Shearwater, 16 Sooty Shearwater, one Great Skua, three Arctic Tern and two Common Tern.(John N Murphy)

Another Wilson’s Petrel was seen off Ross Ringing Station at 11.55.(JNM)

Monday 4th August 2025

At Ross Ringing Station between 10.45-12.00 there were two Wilson’s Petrel @(11.38) & (11.56), 16 Storm Petrel, two Great Shearwater and three Sooty Shearwater.(John N Murphy)

Seventeen Wilson’s Petrel were seen off the Bridges of Ross during the course of the morning and another one at 13.57.(JNM)

A Seawatch between 05.30-19.00 at the Bridges of Ross produced 31 Wilson’s Storm Petrel, 90 Storm Petrel, 34 Great Shearwater, 29 Cory’s Shearwater, 41 Sooty Shearwater, over 25000 Manx Shearwater, four Great Skua, three Arctic Skua, 25 Arctic Tern and nine Puffin. Only two Wilson’s Petrel showed signs of moulting so most birds were juvenile. (Niall Keogh plus 28 other observers)
