The drake Garganey was seen at the eastern end of the upper lagoon at Coonagh this morning (John N Murphy).

A pair of Garganey were at Coonagh this morning (Tom Tarpey) . This is the sixth record of the species for the County and the second for the site, the first being on May 12th, 2012. See ttbirding.blogspot.com for additional photos. Other migrants of note included an adult Little Gull (John N Murphy), a male Wheatear, three Scaup and 50 Whimbrel. A Whitethroat, several Sedge Warblers, two Swift, a Little Egret, a Lapwing, a Snipe, 13 Pochard, 14 Tufted Duck and a Great-crested Grebe were other birds of note, while a Summer plumage Spotted Redshank (photos at murfswildlife.blogspot.com), 120 Black-tailed Godwits and 30 Redshank also visited during the high tide in the afternoon. A large raptor, a possible Marsh Harrier, was also seen briefly as it left the site and disappeared from view over the river bank (John N Murphy).

Whitethroats were seen near Castleconnell and at Gooig Bog today.
A Swift and a House Martin were seen at Newcastle West this evening.

A Sedge Warbler was the only new migrant at Coonagh while 40 Whimbrel in three flocks passed overhead. Two Little Gulls (Tom Tarpey), an Arctic Tern, seven Redshank and two Lapwing were also present.

The first Swift report of the Spring comes from Kilmallock this morning, followed by a second bird at Corbally this evening. Interestingly these are early dates for Swift in Limerick in year when most other spring migrants are weeks later than normal.
The first reports of singing Blackcap and Grasshopper Warbler were from Rivers, Annacotty and the Groody Valley, Castletroy respectively this evening.

A Green Sandpiper was seen at the Gortadroma Landfill treatment plant, Ballyhahill today.
A Cuckoo was seen near Pallaskenry. This is the first report for the year so far.

Two Little Gulls(Tom Tarpey), 45 Arctic Terns, 19 Whimbrel and a large number of hirondines(mostly Sand Martins) were at Coonagh.
43 Tufted Duck, 18 Pochard, ten Mallard, six Gadwall, two Shoveler, two Wigeon, 20 Redshank, a Greenshank, a Ringed Plover, two Great-crested Grebes, six Little Grebes and a Little Egret were also present.
A pair of House Martins was seen at Croagh, the first record of the year for the species.
Two pairs of Hen Harriers and a Peregrine were seen on the Branch Outing near the Limerick/Tipperary border.
A Willow Warbler was in a garden at Raheen.

A adult Little Gull(Geoff Hunt) and 63 Arctic Terns were at Coonagh today, both species new to the site.
