Monday 16th March 2015

A Jack Snipe was seen at Coonagh today. Other birds of note there were nine Great-crested Grebes, five Gadwall, 30 Tufted Duck, 20 Pochard, a Water Rail and a Little Egret.

Westfields Marsh had a high count of 26 Shoveler.

A pair of Ravens was at Attyflin, Patrickswell.

A Blackcap was at Monaleen.

The drake SURF SCOTER was still off Gleninagh, Black Head today along with 18 Common Scoter, 55 Black-throated Divers, 118 Great Northern Divers, two Red-throated Divers, one first-winter Glaucous Gull, one first-winter and one second-winter Iceland Gull, 200 Razorbills and 30 Gannets, (John N Murphy).
One Lapland Bunting was at Bishop’s Quarter, Ballyvaughan along with the pure albino Curlew, three Little Egrets, 26 Red-breasted Mergansers were between Bishop’s Quarter and Finvarra Point with two Black-throated Divers and 20 Great Northern Divers. (John N Murphy)

At Lough Murree there were two Little Egrets and 16 Red-breasted Mergansers on the sea (John N Murphy)

Saturday 14th March 2015

A first winter Mediterranean Gull was seen at Westfields today.

News was received today of a BTO ringed Black-headed Gull seen at Thomond Weir on 1/2/2015.  The bird was ringed as chick at  Hamford Water, Little Oakley, Essex on 3/6/2006.  The bird was in its ninth year making it one of the oldest ringed Black-headed Gulls seen in Limerick. The current oldest ringed Black-headed Gull is the Swedish ringed bird that has been frequenting the Shannon at the Mill Road, Corbally in recent winters and is now in it’s 11th year.

One Sandmartin was in Ennis town this morning. (Adrian Glasgow)
The above first year Black-headed Gull wearing this white colour ring with black letters and numbers (29H8), was at Ballyallia Lake this morning, (John N Murphy) along with one Chiffchaff in low song, five Little Egrets, one Woodcock and two Ravens.
There were 56 Greater Scaup at Islandavanna, Clarecastle and 100 Shellduck on the incoming tide with over 200 Teal, 300 Black-headed Gulls and 400 Curlew. (John N Murphy)

Seven Sand Martin were at Drehednagower Bridge, Ennis this afternoon.(Nuala and Tom Lynch) These are the first record of summer migrants returning from Africa to Clare.
