Jackdaw with pale collar ©Geoff Hunt

This pale collared Jackdaw was seen at Newcastle West today.  While a white or pale collar is one of a number of features associated with eastern races of Jackdaw, e.g. the Scandinavian and Russian races, it is not diagnostic on its own.  There is a lot of uncertainty about the occurrence of eastern Jackdaws in Ireland and western Europe. When they do occur that are generally mid to late winter records.
